The Art of Learning To Draw

The ability to draw realistically relies on two skills. One skill is visual and requires that you see the subject just as it is. As simple as that sounds, it takes practice to look at anything objectively. Our minds like to skip over details and it takes a bit of training to overcome that tendency. Drawing with a hand held drawing "frame" is a great way to train your eyes to see what's really there. The other skill is physical hand-eye coordination, and the best way to improve that is by simply using your pencil daily.

Drawing is one of those rare skills that teaches itself once the ball is rolling. Shortly after you learn to observe well and have a degree of control over your pencil, practicing sharpens these skills. At that point, the act of drawing teaches you how to draw.

If you want to learn how to draw well, you need to do three things.

1. Doodle a lot to learn pencil control.
2. Use a drawing frame to help learn how to see.
3. Practice those two skills by drawing something everyday.

Pencil an paper are common things and you probably have both near you right now. There's really nothing standing between you and rewarding drawing moments, so go ahead and pick up a pencil and draw!
