How long has Toad Hollow Studio been online? A version of this site has been online since 1998. It started on an AOL personal homepage as a simple gallery to display my artwork. I loved showing artwork on the web so much that I moved those pages to their own domain and added lots more content. I've always loved teaching and writing about drawing, too, so I added how-to articles right away.

Do you make a living as an artist? I haven't always been able to make enough money from my creative efforts to live on, and I may not be able to in the future but, at the moment, I do make my living as an artist. Most of my living is made by writing about drawing, teaching workshops, freelance illustration work, and selling my work.

How can I make a living as an artist? Many artists never make a living from their art and the enjoyment of creation is the only "payment" they ever receive for their efforts. Even successful artists have to work non-art types of jobs to support themselves and their families sometimes. If you want to make your living as an artist, it's a good idea to have another marketable skill that you can fall back on.

Teaching art is one common way that artist's support themselves. Some artists study design and go into commercial art. Other artists don't like to mix their work life with their art work at all, and they find a non-art type of job to support themselves with.
