How to Draw Fantasy Artwork

Drawing fantasy artwork takes a certain frame of mind. You have to step out of your normal world and into the world of magic.

Imagine you are walking along a path in the woods. You are deep in the woods and the only way through the tangled undergrowth is a very narrow path. It looks like rabbits and deer use it but certainly not humans. It leads to a tree. A very old tree that is so big around that if you would stretch out your arms and embrace the tree your fingertips would not begin to curve around its girth.

In the tree is a door. A sturdy old door made out of thick planks of wood and iron bands. The door is overgrown with vines but yet the path leads right to it. Reach out your hand and grasp the iron handle. As you pull it open the vines move out of the way and a low angled light flows out of the tree and illuminates you from head to foot.

This is your portal into the magic realm. Step in. Don’t forget to take your sketchbook with you.
