To make a better blender, trim their bristles. Rubbing the trimmed bristles on a sandpaper block smooths and shapes the brush further. Here&#8217;s how I make my blending brushes.<\/p>\n<h3>Making Blenders From Brushes<\/h3>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13726\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/brush.jpg?resize=67%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"#2 cut brush for shading\" width=\"67\" height=\"200\" \/>A No. 2 flat brush trimmed back to about 1\/8 of an inch makes a small blender for delicate shading. That length will give you the right stiffness for &#8220;pushing&#8221; graphite for most No. 2 brushes. I trim these brushes straight across or angled. I don&#8217;t use a sandpaper block on these small, soft brushes.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ab-3.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6521 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ab-3.jpg?resize=278%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Angled brush cutting, holding the bristles.\" width=\"278\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ab-3.jpg?resize=278%2C300&amp;ssl=1 278w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ab-3.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 278px) 85vw, 278px\" \/><\/a>A No. 3 and larger flat brush can be trimmed into an angle of approximately 1\/8&#8243; to 1\/4&#8243; long. If the brush bristles are white, I mark the measurements on the brush with a pencil. Then, I cut along the line with sharp scissors. You have to hold the bristles in place as you cut, as I&#8217;m doing here, or they will slide away from the scissors.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/hr-3.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6533 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/hr-3.jpg?resize=292%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cutting half round brush with nail clippers\" width=\"292\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/hr-3.jpg?resize=292%2C300&amp;ssl=1 292w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/hr-3.jpg?resize=50%2C50&amp;ssl=1 50w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/hr-3.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 292px) 85vw, 292px\" \/><\/a>I make my half-round brushes out of No. 3 brushes, too. I mark the shape I want on the bristles with a pencil, with the apex at about 1\/4&#8243;, and use a large set of nail clippers to cut the half-round shape. The nail clippers pinch the bristles as they cut and keep them from slipping away, and they are half-round so they help cut the shape.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<h3>Smoothing and Shaping Blenders With Sandpaper<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/sanded-unsanded-2.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-12369\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/sanded-unsanded-2.jpg?resize=300%2C395&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Sanded vs unsanded brushes\" width=\"300\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/sanded-unsanded-2.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/sanded-unsanded-2.jpg?resize=228%2C300&amp;ssl=1 228w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/sanded-unsanded-2.jpg?resize=455%2C600&amp;ssl=1 455w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>After cutting, I rub the ends of the bristles of both angled and half round brushes back and forth over sandpaper to smooth and shape them.<\/p>\n<p>You can see the difference between an unsanded and sanded brush in the image to the left. Check the bristles frequently because the sandpaper can sand through them quickly.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/end.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-12354\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/end.jpg?resize=300%2C309&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Sanding the end of a blending brush.\" width=\"300\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/end.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/end.jpg?resize=291%2C300&amp;ssl=1 291w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>To sand the ends of the bristles, hold the brush perpendicularly to the sandpaper and rub back and forth. This will soften the interior of the brush too, so don&#8217;t skip this step.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/side.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-12356\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/side.jpg?resize=300%2C275&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Sanding the side of the blending brush.\" width=\"300\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/side.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/side.jpg?resize=300%2C275&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSand the sides of the brush by pulling them along the sandpaper. You can put a finger on the brush and press down for a more forceful pull to speed up the process. Again, check your progress often.<\/p>\n<p>You can expect to spend ten to twenty minutes sanding a No. 3 brush into a well shaped blender.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p>I don&#8217;t recommend any particular brand of brush, but I have a warning about Liquitex Basics brushes and bristle brushes. Bristle brushes are too stiff to blend graphite well, and Liquitex Basics brushes actually &#8220;lift&#8221; the graphite. I asked the Liquitex company about this phenomenon, and they said that they engineered their Basics brushes to &#8220;lift&#8221; watercolor paint, and it didn&#8217;t surprise them to hear that their brush had the same effect on graphite!
