Each layer concentrates on one part of the texture like this:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>General background value<\/li>\n<li>Large shadows<\/li>\n<li>Large highlights<\/li>\n<li>Small shadows<\/li>\n<li>Small highlights<\/li>\n<li>&#8230; and so forth<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I&#8217;m using a reference photo of the field across the road from our house.<\/p>\n<p>What caught my eye about this scene was all the Queen Anne&#8217;s Lace (tall white wild flower or wild carrot) growing by our mailbox.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to work over the value I already laid down for the field. I created the value with a brush and loose powdered graphite, so it&#8217;ll be easy to work on top of it. The cut-out squares are under two inches.<\/p>\n<p>I place one over the photograph and one over the same spot on the drawing, then I draw that area with full detail before moving on.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s more about making and using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/2015\/11\/drawing-with-masks\/\">masks for drawing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The masks help me draw the details at the correct size and in the right position. I did that with a B pencil and smooth hatching, then finished with a stiff brush to blend it. Next, I used a sharpened stick eraser to pull out the main highlights.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m using Arches Hotpress Watercolor paper. It&#8217;s tough paper that holds deep blacks and can take a lot of erasing.<\/p>\n<p>I always think a drawing looks a little ugly at this stage. It&#8217;s looks smudgy and unformed. Then I used a sharp 2H pencil to draw the smallest dark details. I used a brush and stump afterward to smooth and blend those details.<\/p>\n<p>Even working this small, this texture is about shape, value, and soft and hard edges.<\/p>\n<p>All I have left to do is add the brightest highlights and blend this section into the one next to it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1445\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1445\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/texture-step-four.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1445 \" title=\"Texture Step Four\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/texture-step-four-300x240.jpg?resize=300%2C240\" alt=\"Texture Step Four\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/texture-step-four.jpg?resize=300%2C240&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/texture-step-four.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Texture Step Four<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Texture Step Four: Finish and begin again.<\/strong> I finished by picking out highlights with a battery powered eraser and then fixing their shapes and values with a 2H pencil.<\/p>\n<p>I moved on to the next square using the same technique. You can seen that I&#8217;ve already darkened the background and erased the main highlights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m Not This Organized:<\/strong> I don&#8217;t draw in little organized squares all the time! I use masks for drawing really detailed areas, and this scene happens to have a lot of detail. I usually jump around the drawing and bring different parts to different stages, and everything comes together in the end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"boldlarge\">Supplies<\/p>\n<p>Because you can never have too many art supplies, here are the tools I&#8217;m using\u00a0to draw this piece.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arches Bright White Hotpress Watercolor Paper<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.awltovhc.com\/be100vvzntrCFEFJIEECEDHMIGDK\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/strong>&#8211; My usual paper of choice for drawings that are going to work the paper hard.
