The teddy bear above was drawn using this technique.<\/p>\n<h3>Supplies<\/h3>\n<p>2B &amp; HB pencils<br \/>\nKneaded eraser<br \/>\nSmooth drawing paper<\/p>\n<h3>Before You Begin<\/h3>\n<p>Draw four one-inch squares on smooth drawing paper.<\/p>\n<p>Keep the pencils sharply pointed throughout the exercise.<\/p>\n<h3>Square 1 &#8211; A Rough Gradation<\/h3>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11861\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gradation-1.jpg?resize=304%2C208&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"gradation-1\" width=\"304\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gradation-1.jpg?w=304&amp;ssl=1 304w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gradation-1.jpg?resize=300%2C205&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 85vw, 304px\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Fill the upper left corner with the tip of a sharply pointed\u00a02B pencil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Make several back and forth swings (or hatch marks) with the pencil held in a writing grip at a 45-degree angle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>It should take five or six passes to darken completely, or you&#8217;re probably pressing too hard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Hatch the rest of the first half of the square, but lighten the pressure on the pencil as you approach the diagonal mid point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>When you reach the middle,\u00a0switch to an HB pencil\u00a0and try to match the hatching.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Again, make several passes to darken the hatch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Gradually\u00a0lighten the strokes as you approach the bottom right corner, but leave the last small tip of the corner\u00a0untouched.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Square 2 &#8211; A Slightly Smoother Gradation<\/h3>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11862\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gradation-2.jpg?resize=304%2C208&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"gradation-2\" width=\"304\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gradation-2.jpg?w=304&amp;ssl=1 304w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gradation-2.jpg?resize=300%2C205&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 85vw, 304px\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Once again, start the gradation with the 2B pencil in the upper left corner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Switch to the HB pencil at the diagonal half mark to finish.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>This time however, make the gradation smoother by filling in the spaces between the hatch marks with a sharp pencil tip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You&#8217;ll notice that the soft pencil (2B) and the hard pencil (HB) don&#8217;t blend perfectly where they meet. (Yes, I know this is getting repetitive, but keep going.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Now, blend away the line where the two pencils meet\u00a0by hatching the HB slightly over into the 2B&#8217;s area just past that line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Square 4 &#8211; Smoothest!<\/h3>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11864\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gradation-4.jpg?resize=304%2C208&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"gradation-4\" width=\"304\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gradation-4.jpg?w=304&amp;ssl=1 304w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gradation-4.jpg?resize=300%2C205&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 85vw, 304px\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Create the same gradation one more time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Now hatch the HB over the 2B\u00a0all the way up into the corner of the dark half.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The harder pencil works as a kind of blender by pushing the softer pencil&#8217;s graphite down into the grain of the paper that it skipped over, darkening the value and making the hatch look smoother.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Finally, pinch the kneaded eraser into small tapered point and\u00a0gently &#8220;tap&#8221; out any distracting dark spots in the gradation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you made it to here, congratulations!
