This lesson is designed to help you gain control of your pencil.<\/p>\n<h3>Supplies:<\/h3>\n<p>HB pencil<br \/>\nKneaded eraser<br \/>\nSmooth drawing paper or Bristol Board<\/p>\n<h3>Before You Begin<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Draw\u00a0five one inch squares. (It may be easier to make a block of six like I have.)<\/li>\n<li>Keep the pencil sharply pointed during the exercise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step One &#8211;\u00a0Single Layer Hatch<\/h3>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11868\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/smooth-1.jpg?resize=330%2C238&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"smooth-1\" width=\"330\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/smooth-1.jpg?w=330&amp;ssl=1 330w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/smooth-1.jpg?resize=300%2C216&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 85vw, 330px\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Hatch a layer of graphite in the first box, but do it with only one layer of graphite.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep a light writing grip on the pencil\u00a0&#8212; about one or two inches above the point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Fill the box with back and forth motions, creating swaths of graphite about one half inch wide. Fill the box with several swaths of hatching instead of one big one. \u00a0You&#8217;ll be able to see their edges, and that&#8217;s ok.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The hatching movement should originate in your elbow and not your wrist.\u00a0Your hand and arm should swing just off the paper from your elbow. This time, give some effort to blending the swaths together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"largeboldbrwn\">Step Three &#8211; Blend The Swath\u00a0Edges<\/h3>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11870\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/smooth-3.jpg?resize=330%2C238&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"smooth-3\" width=\"330\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/smooth-3.jpg?w=330&amp;ssl=1 330w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/smooth-3.jpg?resize=300%2C216&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 85vw, 330px\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Fill the third box with one layer of graphite again, but this time blend the edges of the swaths into each other by overlapping them a bit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step Four &#8211; Hatch\u00a0Layers<\/h3>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11871\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/smooth-4.jpg?resize=330%2C238&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"smooth-4\" width=\"330\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/smooth-4.jpg?w=330&amp;ssl=1 330w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/smooth-4.jpg?resize=300%2C216&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 85vw, 330px\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Fill in the forth square using as many hatch layers as you like.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the sharp pencil tip to<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>even out light\u00a0streaks by touching\u00a0them lightly until they blend in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step Five &#8211;\u00a0Use The Eraser<\/h3>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11872\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/smooth-5.jpg?resize=330%2C238&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"smooth-5\" width=\"330\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/smooth-5.jpg?w=330&amp;ssl=1 330w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/smooth-5.jpg?resize=300%2C216&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 85vw, 330px\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Fill in the next square the same way you did the last one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>After you touch-up the light streaks, pinch the kneaded eraser into a point and gently tap out any dark spots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If you made any areas too light, fill them back in with the the sharp pencil tip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>My fifth square looks lighter and smoother than the others because I took out the dark streaks and smudges.
