Rosinski\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" \/><strong>Step One<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Draw The Mug&#8217;s Shape<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brace the drawing paper at an angle, or your drawing will be distorted.<\/p>\n<p>With your pencil in an overhand grip, use the side of the lead to\u00a0draw big loose lines in the general shape of the mug. These first thick lines are meant to be more exploratory than precise.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3455 size-full\" title=\"Draw Your Mug - Shape C. Just let the lines build up over each other, nice and easy.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\u00a0 <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3456 size-full\" title=\"Draw Your Mug - Refine The Shape C. Rosinski\" width=\"300\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/mug-2.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/mug-2.jpg?resize=258%2C300&amp;ssl=1 258w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Step Two<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Refine the Shape<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After you&#8217;ve made a lot of experimental lines, start to sharpen and define the outline with the pencil held in an ordinary writing grip.<\/p>\n<p>The rim and bottom of the mug are made of circles seen from the side or ovals, and they are nearly at the same degree of tilt. Both of my ovals measure about an index finger&#8217;s width deep. Measuring helped me make matching curves at the top and bottom of the mug.<\/p>\n<p>Add the handle after the sides are drawn. Note how far from the edge it joins the cup. To help place it, look for any space between the inside of the handle and the mug&#8217;s edge.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3457 size-full\" title=\"Draw Your Mug - Lighten The Line C. Rosinski\" width=\"300\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/mug-3.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/mug-3.jpg?resize=258%2C300&amp;ssl=1 258w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step Three<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Lighten The Line<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Carefully erase any lines that don&#8217;t belong.<\/p>\n<p>If the final lines are darker than the mug, form the kneaded eraser into a rounded shape and tap or roll it over lines until they lighten to about the &#8216;mid-value&#8217; of your mug.<\/p>\n<p>The mid-value is between the mug&#8217;s darkest shadow and the lightest highlight. Make the hatching look as smooth and even as you can.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re still struggling with finding a mid-value, try this test:<\/p>\n<p>Make a test hatch on a corner of your paper, out to the edge, and hold it next to the mug to compare. Squint your eyes to blur everything and check to see if it&#8217;s lighter than most of the shadows and darker than most of the highlights. If so, that&#8217;s a good mid-value hatch.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3459 size-full\" title=\"Draw Your Mug - Shadows And Highlights C. Rosinski\" width=\"300\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/mug-5.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/mug-5.jpg?resize=274%2C300&amp;ssl=1 274w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step Five<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> First Shadows And Highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shadows have hard and soft edges. Hard shadow edges end abruptly, like the shadow lines around the handle and rim of my mug. Soft shadow edges end gradually and blend into the areas next to them, like the shadow on the left side of this mug.<\/p>\n<p>Look for the most apparent shadows on your mug and hatch them until they darken. Visually, it&#8217;s more important for shadows to be in the right place than for them to be perfectly formed so you have some wiggle room.<\/p>\n<p>Erased body hatching can be tricky to match, so if you need to erase a shadow, gently &#8216;tap&#8217; it with the kneaded eraser until it lightens, then touch it up afterward.<\/p>\n<p>The inside of your mug will most likely be shadowed with several hard-edged reflections around the lip. Shade &#8220;around&#8221; the largest highlights, leaving them lighter than the shadowed inner part of the cup.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3460 size-full\" title=\"Draw Your Mug - More Shadows And Highlights C. Rosinski\" width=\"348\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/mug-6.jpg?w=348&amp;ssl=1 348w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/mug-6.jpg?resize=300%2C222&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 348px) 85vw, 348px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step Six<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> More Highlights &amp; Shadows<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pinch the kneaded eraser into a wedge or point shape, then drag it across the hatching to erase more highlights. I erased them from my cup&#8217;s rim, handle, and bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Like shadows, highlights don&#8217;t have to be perfectly shaped, but they help to create a realistic effect if you get them in the right places.<\/p>\n<p>Add the darkest details with the point of the pencil. I added the darkest shadows on the rim, the handle, and along the sides and bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Lightly hatch a cast shadow to make the mug look like it&#8217;s sitting on something. Notice that cast shadows have soft and hard edges, too. My cast shadow starts with a hard edge near the mug, but then softens as the shadow gets farther away.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3461 size-full\" title=\"Draw Your Mug - Final Details C. Rosinski\" width=\"350\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/mug-7.jpg?w=350&amp;ssl=1 350w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/mug-7.jpg?resize=300%2C219&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 85vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step Seven<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Final Details<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Add any decorations now. Here are some things to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Any horizontal stripe will match the curvature at the top or bottom of the mug.<\/li>\n<li>To help place mug decorations in the right place, look at how close they are to the mug&#8217;s edges, top, bottom, and handle.<\/li>\n<li>Decorations distort as they near the mug&#8217;s edge.
