How about your paper? I don\u2019t mean to suggest that your drawing tools are not what you think they are, or that some subversive pencils have infiltrated your pencil box and plan to overthrow you, or anything like that. I just think it\u2019s a good idea to know your tools so well that you automatically reach for what you need when you need it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>When you know your tools that well, you can focus on other things, like listening for inspiration, finding hidden patterns, or maybe just enjoying the beauty of a simple line. In other words, you\u2019re freer to enjoy all the things that attracted you to drawing in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>This test helps you learn what your pencils can do on a specific paper. (Including that suspicious looking pencil you found on the floor at the back of the closet, in case you\u2019re worrying about it.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>You\u2019ll need 2H, B, and 2B pencils and your current drawing paper.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2229\" style=\"width: 125px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/pencil-tip-small.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2229\" title=\"Small Flat Pencil Tip\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/pencil-tip-small-125x125.jpg?resize=125%2C125\" alt=\"Small Flat Pencil Tip\" width=\"125\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Small Flat Pencil Tip<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>FYI &#8211; Here\u2019s what I used<\/strong><br \/>\nStrathmore Drawing Paper<br \/>\nPalimino Pencils<br \/>\nI used a small flat pencil tip throughout the test.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>I used simple crossed columns for this exercise, but if you want to make things more interesting, use any shape you want. Make a note of what pencil you used for each.<\/li>\n<li>Use the same pencil tip shape and use the same pressure on the pencil for the entire drawing.<\/li>\n<li>Do the same with the columns that cross the first set.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2226\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2226\" style=\"width: 125px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/hatch-strips-crossed.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2226\" title=\"Crossed Hatch Strips\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/hatch-strips-crossed-125x125.jpg?resize=125%2C125\" alt=\"Crossed Hatch Strips\" width=\"125\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/hatch-strips-crossed.jpg?resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 125w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/hatch-strips-crossed.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 85vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crossed Hatch Strips<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you have trouble getting the paper to accept the crossed over hatching, you probably need to find a paper with a little more \u201ctooth\u201d or grain. You can still use the paper you have, but now you know it\u2019s not perfect for all drawing techniques.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Hatching Results<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>Your results will be different from mine unless we\u2019re using the same pencils, paper, pressure, hatch angle, etc., so you\u2019ll need to do your own comparisons, but here are a few things I noticed about my own test.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2224\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2224\" style=\"width: 125px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2h-over-hatch.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2224\" title=\"2H Over Hatch\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2h-over-hatch-125x125.jpg?resize=125%2C125\" alt=\"2H Over Hatch\" width=\"125\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2h-over-hatch.jpg?resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 125w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2h-over-hatch.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2h-over-hatch.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 85vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2224\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2H Over Hatch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first thing I saw was the smooth textures that the 2H over hatch made. I could use those textures to draw smooth surfaces, like metal, or water, or shiny ceramic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2225\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2225\" style=\"width: 125px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/b-over-hatch.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2225\" title=\"B Over Hatch\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/b-over-hatch-125x125.jpg?resize=125%2C125\" alt=\"B Over Hatch\" width=\"125\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/b-over-hatch.jpg?resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 125w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/b-over-hatch.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/b-over-hatch.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 85vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2225\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">B Over Hatch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here\u2019s a surprise &#8211; The B over hatch hardly had any effect! It made the values a tiny bit darker, and the textures are a little different, but I won\u2019t reach for a B pencil to alter hatching also made with a B pencil while using this paper anymore.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2222\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2222\" style=\"width: 125px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2b-over-hatch.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2222\" title=\"2B Over Hatch\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2b-over-hatch-125x125.jpg?resize=125%2C125\" alt=\"2B Over Hatch\" width=\"125\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2b-over-hatch.jpg?resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 125w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2b-over-hatch.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2b-over-hatch.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 85vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2222\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2B Over Hatch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 2B over hatch made the most stand-out textures of all. I could use those to draw gravel or bark or any hard texture that reflects small bits of light.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2223\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2223\" style=\"width: 125px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2h-over-2b.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2223\" title=\"2H Over 2B\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2h-over-2b-125x125.jpg?resize=125%2C125\" alt=\"2H Over 2B\" width=\"125\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2h-over-2b.jpg?resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 125w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2h-over-2b.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 85vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2223\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2H Over 2B<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And here\u2019s something that will be true to some degree no matter what pencil brand or paper type you\u2019re using. The 2H over the 2B made the darkest value. Any pencil a few degrees harder will darken hatching made with a softer lead. It does that in part by pushing the softer lead into the parts of the grain that it skipped the first time around.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Test Sample File<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>Make a note of the paper used and file this with your other test samples. If you don\u2019t have a test sample file, you do now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Here\u2019s the secret to drawing well &#8211; draw a lot, experiment, play, test, and follow your own zest for the medium.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Carol<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pardon me, but do you really know anything about your pencils?
