I call it mindless because I feel my way through the drawing more than I think about it. Hold the pencil in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/drawing_workshops\/Shading_1.html\">overhand grip<\/a>, swing the pencil from the elbow pivot point, and draw three fat arcing stems with the side of the lead. (Think weird looking Aloe Vera plant.)<\/p>\n<p>This pencil grip and arm position combo gives you a lot of freedom of movement, so put some variety into the shapes. Relax and let your hand take the pencil in the natural arc it wants to follow.<\/p>\n<h3>Very Simple Shading<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2285\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2285\" style=\"width: 125px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/lighting.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2285\" title=\"Lighting\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/lighting-125x125.jpg?resize=125%2C125\" alt=\"Lighting\" width=\"125\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2285\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lighting<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I shaded this drawing with imaginary lighting similar to the type on these chain links. On rounded form, this lighting makes downward edges dark and upward curves catch the highlight at the center. Imagine that pressure on the pencil pushes the form away from you and down into the paper. Less pressure lifts the form out of the paper towards you.<br \/>\nAfter a while, you&#8217;ll associate pencil pressure with form so well that you will actually feel the form take shape as you draw.<\/p>\n<p>For variety, I &#8220;flattened&#8221; the twisted tips of the stems by hatching them a single value. You don\u2019t have to do this if you\u2019re on a roll with &#8220;round&#8221; shading and don\u2019t want to stop.<\/p>\n<h3>Stems 2 and 3<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2288\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2288\" style=\"width: 125px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/three-stems003.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2288\" title=\"Stem 2 Basic Shading\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/three-stems003-125x125.jpg?resize=125%2C125\" alt=\"Stem 2 Basic Shading\" width=\"125\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/three-stems003.jpg?resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 125w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/three-stems003.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/three-stems003.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 85vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2288\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stem 2 Basic Shading<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The other two stems are shaded in the same way, so relax and just repeat what you&#8217;ve already done. It felt like they needed more detail, so I switched to a writing grip and added greater 3d form to the twists by shading the farthest edges, highlighting the closest edges, and by adding a touch of shading underneath each one.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<h3>Small Fixes<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2293\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2293\" style=\"width: 125px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/three-stems0061.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2293\" title=\"Darker Shadows And Lighter Highlights\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/three-stems0061-125x125.jpg?resize=125%2C125\" alt=\"Darker Shadows And Lighter Highlights\" width=\"125\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/three-stems0061.jpg?resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 125w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/three-stems0061.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/three-stems0061.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 85vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2293\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Darker Shadows And Lighter Highlights<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Finally, use the kneaded eraser to even out dark spots in the texture and make the highlights lighter if you want to make the round stems pop up from the paper plane.<\/p>\n<p>I used a kneaded eraser to \u201ctap\u201d out lighter highlights down the middle of the stems in my drawing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reminder:<\/strong> Don\u2019t rub to erase or the graphite will smudge and the consistent texture of this drawing will be lost. Tap the drawing with the eraser to lift the graphite gradually, and it&#8217;ll blend with the texture.<\/p>\n<p>Some drawings call for variation, but the uniform texture created here lets the eye cruise on without a hitch. This also makes a calm and uncomplicated drawing experience.<\/p>\n<p>Since graphite does smears so easily, spend a few seconds removing any smudges around the edges and then you&#8217;re done.<\/p>\n<h3>Looking Forward<\/h3>\n<p>This drawing probably won&#8217;t be something you&#8217;ll want to have framed, or maybe it will because art just happens sometimes. Either way, you&#8217;ve taken more of the drawing process into yourself, and someday soon it will spontaneously flow from there to your pencil tip and onto the paper without a thought.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the kind of drawing I do in the evening to unwind.
