I live for the moment when 3d form emerges on 2d paper, and especially when I\u2019m not expecting it. When I\u2019m drawing contour lines with my pen, they flow close together and meander apart, making hills and valleys where they please. If I add graphite or more ink to accentuate those lines, and if I get it right, it\u2019s 3d show time.<\/p>\n

Three Shells With Scaffolding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I used ink to create the shell textures here, and graphite to create their very smooth inner surfaces. I like the look of this so much that I\u2019m going to do it again in my next drawing. The background of this drawing, however, sucks. I decided to put \u201ccoral\u201d behind the shells so they would look as if they had a \u201cscaffolding\u201d to help them stay \u201cstacked.\u201d I do these makes-sense-at-the-moment things to my drawings all the time, often taking them from good-job to uh-oh at warp speed.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the drawing I\u2019m working on now. Six shells, four down, and two up with inner surfaces showing. I already like this one so much that I don\u2019t want to work on it for fear another makes-sense-at-the-moment moment might sneak up on me.<\/p>\n

Art\u2019s plan for me, though, is that I remount the high dive right after the belly flop, not knowing if I\u2019m going to smack the water again, or dive like an otter. You\u2019d think I\u2019d be used to that by now, wouldn\u2019t ya.<\/p>\n
