Holding a pencil vertically and horizontally always gives you two true reference lines to draw\u00a0from. Here&#8217;s how to use them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3827\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3827\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3827 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/mug-pencil-center-cross.jpg?resize=150%2C140\" alt=\"mug-pencil-center-cross\" width=\"150\" height=\"140\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3827\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Find\u00a0vertical and horizontal center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Finding Center<\/strong><br \/>\nHold a pencil by its tip so that it dangles loosely\u00a0to find an accurate vertical line, and hold a pencil horizontally on your fingertips and let it find it&#8217;s own balance for a nearly perfect horizontal line.<\/p>\n<p>Duplicate those\u00a0lines in the middle of your\u00a0paper.<\/p>\n<p>If possible, find a landmark to draw\u00a0at the center point. For example, there is a decoration on this mug at about the center point. The vertical sides of the block are a stand in for the pencil. Compare the drawing&#8217;s negative space to the model&#8217;s negative space. If you&#8217;re familiar with a protractor, you can take a mental note that the angle is more or less than thus-n-such degrees.
