But in trying to explain things thoroughly, I&#8217;ve probably written too much, which I tend to do. Ha! So, there&#8217;s a <a href=\"#slideshow\">slideshow<\/a> at the bottom of the page with my voice-over talking you through it, if you prefer listening.<\/p>\n<p><b>Supplies<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I mention an HB pencil and a rectangular vinyl eraser in these lessons. You can substitute whatever you have for those, but you&#8217;ll need 9&#215;12 drawing paper to fit the viewfinder.<\/li>\n<li>Print this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Large-Frame-Grid-Template.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viewfinder<\/a> template on heavy paper or transfer it\u00a0to cardboard. You&#8217;ll need string for the crossed lines too.<\/li>\n<li>Print this image of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Heart.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heart<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re a drawing\u00a0rookie, here are\u00a0my <a href=\"#supplies\">supply suggestions<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4107 size-full\" title=\"Large viewfinder C. Rosinski\" width=\"250\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Make A Viewfinder With Crossed String Markers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cut out the viewfinder and snip the small lines on the outer edges. Then insert the strings into the snips so they cross in the middle as shown with the red lines.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>How Viewfinders\u00a0Work<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When placed on top of a photo or in front of your drawing subject, the inner edges and crossed strings create landmarks that help you draw an outline correctly.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4110 size-full\" title=\"Drawing Grid On Paper C. Rosinski\" width=\"250\" height=\"207\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step One<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use an HB pencil to <em>lightly<\/em> draw around the <strong>outside<\/strong> edge of the viewfinder. Add the crossed lines through the middle.<\/p>\n<p><em>(The outside edge of this viewfinder is proportional to the inside opening. You&#8217;ll learn how to make\u00a0different sized\u00a0proportional viewfinders in a later lesson.)<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4108 size-full\" title=\"Drawing viewfinder Over Heart C. Rosinski\" width=\"250\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step Two<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The heart silhouette is a bit challenging to draw freehand, but the viewfinder makes\u00a0it easier.<\/p>\n<p>Center the viewfinder over the heart. Now you can see how it&#8217;s divided into four smaller quarters, with lots of reference points to help guide your drawing.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4113 size-full\" title=\"Drawing Grid With Reference Marks\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/heart-drawing-marks-rosinski.jpg?resize=250%2C208\" alt=\"Drawing Grid With Reference Marks\" width=\"250\" height=\"208\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step Three<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With an HB pencil, mark the points on the drawing grid where the heart crosses each line of the string and touches the\u00a0inner\u00a0edges of the viewfinder.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4111 size-full\" title=\"Measuring Distance With Pencil\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/heart-at-angle-rosinski.jpg?resize=250%2C212\" alt=\"Measuring Distance With Pencil\" width=\"250\" height=\"212\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can estimate where the points are, or you can measure with your pencil tip and thumb. You can plot other points by measuring this way too.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, it will help you draw the upper curves of the heart if you mark how far away the upper edges are from the corners, like I&#8217;m doing is this illustration.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4114\" title=\"Heart Drawing In Grid\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/heart-drawing-rosinski-300x249.jpg?resize=250%2C208\" alt=\"Heat Drawing In Grid\" width=\"250\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/heart-drawing-rosinski.jpg?resize=300%2C249&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/heart-drawing-rosinski.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 85vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step Four<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I had to make my drawing dark so you could see it well. Keep yours lighter so you can erase mistakes easily.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As you work, quickly look back and forth between the heart and your drawing. Use the marks to help place the line. If you haven&#8217;t drawn very much before, this probably seems like a lot to keep track of. Just go slow and work your way around the heart<\/p>\n<p>Making many &#8220;trial&#8221; lines with your pencil until the outline looks right is okay. Most drawings are done by making a mark, checking to see if it looks right, and correcting it. And it&#8217;s alright to skip around and draw the easiest parts first.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/frame-heart-rosinski-quarter.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4187 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Quarter Viewfinder Negative Space\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/frame-heart-rosinski-quarter-125x100.jpg?resize=125%2C100\" alt=\"Quarter Viewfinder Negative Space\" width=\"125\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSometimes, it&#8217;s helpful to draw one quarter at a time. Cover all but one quarter, and then you can see that the heart and the shape beside the heart are both just shapes. (So don&#8217;t let them scare you.) Technically, the heart is &#8216;positive&#8217; space, and the empty shape is &#8216;negative&#8217; space. When we draw them, however,\u00a0 they are equally important.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4112\" title=\"Heart Drawing Completed\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/heart-drawing-done-rosinski-125x125.jpg?resize=250%2C208\" alt=\"Heart Drawing Completed\" width=\"250\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/heart-drawing-done-rosinski.jpg?resize=300%2C249&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/heart-drawing-done-rosinski.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 85vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step Five<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use the vinyl eraser to remove the grid lines,\u00a0and use the point of a\u00a0corner for\u00a0the delicate erasing around the heart. That&#8217;ll give you a little more control.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve drawn many extra lines, look at the heart as you erase the extras. It&#8217;ll be like you&#8217;re erasing everything but the line of the heart, and that&#8217;s fine. Knowing how to use your eraser really well is a skill you need to have too. :)<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>More Practice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Butterfly.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">butterfly<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Bird.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bird<\/a> silhouette for more practice, but you can draw any image like this. Choose a simple image from an ad in a magazine and try it. Don&#8217;t criticize yourself. Just have fun.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"slideshow\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Slideshow Review<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>For some reason, the viewfinder seemed like a whole new thing when I attached strings to it. I thought, &#8220;Great Gods Above! What is the wondrous new thing before me!?
