We\u2019ve got about a week\u2019s worth of snow, but leaves are still visible on the ground at the fence.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve always admired artists who can draw a single leaf so well that it looks like a portrait, so with that in mind I rummaged though the fallen leaves looking for a likely subject.<\/p>\n<p>If felt good to be outside again, looking at what was presented to me by the world to draw. We don\u2019t have a large yard, but I always seem to find something to draw here, and Dot always finds another trail to follow.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going to draw this without any cast shadows on the background, like the leaf is adrift in the universe.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf01.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7964\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf01.jpg?resize=300%2C412&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"January Leaf one Rosinski\" width=\"300\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf01.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf01.jpg?resize=218%2C300&amp;ssl=1 218w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf01.jpg?resize=437%2C600&amp;ssl=1 437w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>As I\u2019m drawing the details, I\u2019m looking for patterns I can easily see and transfer to my drawing. This leaf is highly detailed, and I\u2019m not trying to draw all the details, but a high degree of them will help imply the nature of the leaf.<\/p>\n<p>In a perfect world, I\u2019d draw each detail so well that the underlying values would be just right too, but that\u2019s never the case. After I draw the details, I always have to darken or lighten them so that larger shadows and highlights look right, too.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf02.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7965\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf02.jpg?resize=300%2C415&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"January Leaf Two Rosinski\" width=\"300\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf02.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf02.jpg?resize=217%2C300&amp;ssl=1 217w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf02.jpg?resize=434%2C600&amp;ssl=1 434w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I have started to lay down the dark areas with hatching and lift out the light details with my erasers. It\u2019s very difficult to get the overall dark areas dark enough for some reason. I keep going over them and over them again. I wonder if I\u2019m just being timid, or if I\u2019m not seeing them properly. Drawing from a color version of the photo might have something to do with it. Whatever the cause, it\u2019s frustrating.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, the leaf has no three-dimensional shape at all. It\u2019s just a puddle of detail and is not looking very promising.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf03.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7966\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf03.jpg?resize=300%2C411&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"January Leaf Three Rosinski\" width=\"300\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf03.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf03.jpg?resize=219%2C300&amp;ssl=1 219w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf03.jpg?resize=438%2C600&amp;ssl=1 438w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Drawing this dark on dark detail is challenging. It\u2019s hard to see and hard to match my paper version to the iPad version I\u2019m drawing from. The color photo I\u2019m working from lets me see a lot of range of value, even in the dark areas. I\u2019m adding 40% to 50% of the details now, but none of them are shaped exactly right or are precisely in the right location.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf04.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7967\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf04.jpg?resize=300%2C421&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"January Leaf Four Rosinski\" width=\"300\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf04.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf04.jpg?resize=214%2C300&amp;ssl=1 214w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf04.jpg?resize=427%2C600&amp;ssl=1 427w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I\u2019m happy to see the top part of this area start to have some dimension, since this part of the leaf is curved. The drawing is \u2018signaling\u2019 that the leaf is curved two ways. One way is by the light and dark values, and the second way is by the shape of the details over the curved part.<\/p>\n<p>I was able to draw the bottom half of this area very quickly. The details aren\u2019t very accurate again, however I\u2019m more concerned with getting the underlying values right since this area \u2018undulates\u2019 sculpturally.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf05.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7968\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf05.jpg?resize=300%2C419&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"January Leaf Five Rosinski\" width=\"300\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf05.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf05.jpg?resize=215%2C300&amp;ssl=1 215w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toadhollowstudio.com\/wp_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/January-Leaf05.jpg?resize=430%2C600&amp;ssl=1 430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>This part of the leaf has some reflected lighting, making the leaf glow from beneath, creating a patch of brighter orange-brown. The grayscale photo of this part of the leaf looks dead. The color version is lively. The problem is how to draw \u2018glowing orange\u2019 in grayscale! I think I captured enough of the liveliness in my drawing by concentrating on value.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m happy with this drawing, although there are hundreds of corrections I could have made to make it closer to reality.
